Hazardous Materials Awareness (HMA)

COURSE IS A 6-HOUR TRAINING COURSE. Schedule is as follows:

• Sunday, January 18, 2026 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The primary target audiences for this course are the First Responders (fire, rescue, emergency medical, police, etc.) who will witness or discover a hazardous substance / materials release. Students will be trained to initiate an emergency response sequence by notifying the proper authorities of the the release. They shall have sufficient training or have had sufficient experience to objectively demonstrate competency to understand what hazardous substances are, the risks, potential outcomes, the ability to recognize and identify their presence, their role including site security, safe scene management and how to use the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) during a hazardous materials / weapons of mass destruction (WMD) emergency.

MANDATORY PREREQUISITES: Must be at least 14 years old at start of class.

RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITES: None listed.

CLASS LOCATION(S):

• Lecture & testing shall be held at the Northampton County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) located at 100 Gracedale Avenue, Nazareth, PA 18064. (NC EOC DIRECTIONS)

• Skills shall be held at the Northampton County Fire School (NCFS) located at 6 Nagys Hill Road, Bangor, PA 18013. (NCFS DIRECTIONS)
